Doug Groom and his wife Rosa have a very small vineyard, ten
hectares, nestled in the King Valley of Victoria. Doug makes
elegant French inspired Chardonnay and Pinot Noir but it is
his Shiraz that has gotten the most attention in the Australian
wine press. Rated as one of the top in all of Australia by
Winewise. It is not the blockbuster style of the Barossa Valley,
but again, more French fashioned, bearing true resemblance
to a fine Hermitage or St Joseph.
Like so many of our growers in Australia, Doug is very
natural and non interventional in his grape growing and
wine making techniques -- uses indigenous yeasts, rarely
acidifies, never chapitalizes, adds little sulfites and
bottles without filtration. These are truly artisans wines,
and they show it.
Avalon Wines opened the first Cellar Door in The King Valley
back in 1986. Tasting's and sales of Avalon Wines are also
available at district restaurants, festivals and other functions.
Established in 1981 Doug Groom (winemaker) makes each vintage
a special one with minimal intervention allowing the wine
to show its natural merits.
Avalon is situated 49 km from Wangaratta on the Whitfield
Road and only 45 minutes drive from Mansfield. To visit
Avalon is to experience great wines and picturesque views
of Mt Buffalo surrounded by undulating hills of the Valley.
